Karel Poláček
Narodil se v roce 1892 v Rychnově nad Kněžnou, vystudoval gymnázium a poté pracoval jako úředník. První světovou válku přežil jako voják. V roce 1914 se dostal do zajetí na srbské frontě. Byl odveden do koncentračního tábora Osvětim, kde byl v roce 1944 umučen k smrti. V době, kdy Karel Poláček čekal na transport do koncentračního tábora napsal své nejúspěšnější dílo-Bylo nás pět.
Bylo nás pět
Vypravěčem této knihy je hlavní hrdina Petr Bajza. Popisuje svůj klukovský život ve vesnici.
Má kamarády se kterými vymýšlí různé lumpárny, ale také se mu líbí jedna dívka jménem Eva Svobodová. Jeho kamarád Antonín Bejval vymyslel hru, která není moc bezpečná. Chtěl si z krabic postavit vesnici ve které žije, potom jí podpálit a hrát si na hasiče. K tomuto nápadu se připojili ještě Petr Bajza, Éda Kemlink, Pepek Zilvar a Čeněk Jirsák. Naštěstí se nikomu nic nestalo a oheň včas uhasili. Antonín pár dní potom chtěl ochočit vosy. Po tomto pokusu byli všichni poštípaní a ochočit si vosy už nikdy nezkoušeli. Asi o tři týdny později přijel do vesnice cirkus. Petr Bajza chtěl do cirkusu tak moc, že se přestal prát, dělal si domácí úkoly a byl vzorný. Rodiče mu to nakonec dovolili
a do cirkusu šli.Když byl druhý den ve škole,
bylo mu špatně. Po druhé hodině ho kamarádi
přinesli ze školy protože měl vysokou teplotu.
Když usnul, zdálo se mu, že dostal od
tatínka slona jménem Jumbo. Jumbo
byl jeho nejlepší kamarád a Petr se s
ním chtěl podívat do Indie. Jumbo si
za to chtěl nechat ušít čepici. Petr
povolil a nechal mu jí ušít.Potom
jel do Indie ještě s Čeňkem Jirsákem,
Evou Svobodovu, Antonínem
Bejvalem, Édou Kemlinkem a
Pepkem Zilvarem.V Indii je přivítal
samotný maharadža s jeho dcerou.
Pepek Zilvar se do jeho dcery
zamiloval a šel to maharadžovi
oznámit. Maharadža se naštval
a nechal Zilvara zavřít a potom
popravit. Královna se u maháradži
za Pepka přimluvila. Maharadža
tedy dal Zilvarovi tři otázky a
když na ně správně odpoví tak ho
nepopraví a dá mu svou dceru za
manželku. Pepek Zilvar odpověděl
správně a byla svatba. Potom se Petr
doma probudil a už mu bylo lépe.
Nikdo o výpravě do Indie nevěděl,
ale Petr trval na svém.Potom mu to
bylo jedno a pomalu se uzdravoval.

Petr Bajza je vesnický kluk. Provádí lumpárny s jeho kamarády a někdy to až moc přežene. Jeho rodiče vlastní krámek a prodávají v něm všechno možné.
Tato knížka mě moc nebavila. Špatně se četla, protože jsem nějakým slovům nerozuměla.
